Sclafani Named Avis General CounselGARDEN CITY, N.Y., Aug. 24 -- Avis Rent A Car, Inc. named Karen C. Sclafani, as Vice President-General Counsel, Avis announced today. Sclafani, a 17-year veteran of Avis who played a major advisory role when Avis went public last September, had been serving as Staff Vice President- Deputy General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Her appointment to the new post is effective immediately. As Vice President-General Counsel, Sclafani will be responsible for matters related to all federal and state laws, including corporate, securities, employment and consumer issues, as well as government affairs. A primary focus in Sclafani's new post will be on protection of Avis's assets and reduction of liability. She will continue as Corporate Secretary. "Throughout her career with the company Karen has been a valued contributor representing Avis's interests," said Avis Chief Financial Officer Kevin M. Sheehan, to whom Sclafani will report. "Particularly, during the past 18 months, she has provided critical advice, counsel and leadership as a participant with the teams involved with our capital transactions and other major initiatives. She also played a key role in the recent acquisitions by Avis of Grand Rent A Car and Hayes Leasing, two large franchisees that are now owned by the company." Sclafani joined Avis in December, 1981 as a staff attorney after beginning her career at Mudge, Rose, Guthrie and Alexander in New York City. She became Staff Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in April, 1988 and was named to her most recent position as Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in March, 1997. Sclafani is a graduate of Lemoyne College and New York University School of Law. She is a member of the New York State Bar. Sclafani resides in Bayville, New York with her husband and two children. She is the former Karen Jacon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Jacon of Cohoes, NY.
