Mobil Discovery Well in Indonesia Flows Over 10,000 Barrels Per Day of Oil

FAIRFAX, Va.--Aug. 24, 1998--Mobil Corporation announced Monday that a second drill stem test of the West Seno-2 deepwater discovery offshore East Kalimantan flowed at a daily rate of 10,069 barrels of oil and 9.5 million cubic feet of gas.
The West Seno-2 discovery well is located in the Makassar Strait Production Sharing Contract (PSC) which is held 50 percent by Mobil Makassar, Inc. and 50 percent by Unocal Indonesia Company, the operator of the block.
Last week, Mobil announced that the drill stem test of the deeper interval flowed at a daily rate of 2,900 barrels of oil and 3.1 million cubic feet of gas. In total, the West Seno-2 well encountered 172 feet of vertical hydrocarbon pay in two zones.
The well is located in 2,800 feet of water in the Kutei basin and is just 13 miles northeast of the recent discoveries in the Greater Merah Besar area. The gross resource potential for the Seno area is estimated to be from 210 to 720 million barrels of oil equivalent.
"It seems fitting that Mobil should have a significant exploration discovery in Indonesia on the anniversary of our 100 year presence in the country," said M. W. Scoggins, President, International Exploration and Producing. "We continue to look for opportunities to grow in Indonesia and the results of our exploration program in offshore East Kalimantan are extremely encouraging."
"The Seno and Merah Besar discoveries prove the existence of a substantial hydrocarbon system located in the deepwater area off East Kalimantan", stated Ronald I. Wilson, President and General Manager of Mobil Oil Indonesia. "These results increase the probability of success of our planned drilling program to test the additional prospects in both the Makassar block and the adjacent prospective Rapak PSC." Mobil has a 30 percent working interest in the Rapak PSC.
Mobil plans to continue appraising the Greater Merah Besar and Seno discovery areas to confirm their commerciality. The next well will be the West Seno-1 well to further appraise the reservoirs. After further exploration and appraisal of the Seno area, Mobil will move on to test another potentially significant hydrocarbon accumulation in the Janaka prospect, also located in the Makassar block.
Development plans for the Merah Besar and Seno areas are in the initial phase and envision the use of a tension leg platform concept. Mobil will work with Unocal to quickly determine these plans to enable rapid development. Production from Merah Besar could begin in 2001.
Mobil affiliates, under contractor agreements with Pertamina, the Indonesian national oil company, have working interests in 11 blocks in Indonesia. Mobil is the largest natural gas producer in Indonesia. In 1998, Mobil celebrates its 100th year doing business in Indonesia, its 30th year as a Production Sharing Contractor, its 20th year as a producer of Liquefied Natural Gas and its 10th year as a producer of Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
