Steamboat Springs' Vintage Auto Race & Concours d'Elegance

7 August 1998

Fifteen Years of Racing Tradition: Steamboat Springs' Vintage Auto Race & Concours d'Elegance
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo., Aug.7 -- Racers, start your engines
for the 15th Annual Steamboat Springs Vintage Auto Race and Concours
d'Elegance this Labor Day Weekend, September 4-7.
The excitement of auto racing comes alive on the streets of Steamboat
Springs as eight classes of vintage cars; pre-1968 production sports cars,
sports racing cars and formula cars manufactured through 1972, compete on the
twisting 1.7-mile mountain road course.
Labor Day Weekend marks the end of the Vintage Auto Race as it has come to
be known. Due to many factors, the 1998 race will be the last to be held in
its current venue: the winding streets of Steamboat that have played host to
the event since 1984. The race will be postponed in 1999 while alternative
facilities for the event are considered.
This year's event, which honors Ford, includes practice and qualifying
sessions on Friday and Saturday, while the races are held on Sunday.
Spectators will not only view and be entertained by Shelby, but will also see
the streets come alive as AC Cobra, Bugatti, Cooper Monaco, Ginetta, Maserati,
Porsche and many others race on one of the nation's few remaining street
tracks.
The courthouse lawn and main street downtown are devoted to a very popular
Concours d'Elegance on Saturday, offering an impressive array of lovingly
restored vintage automobiles. And if you need a break from the fast-paced
action on the mountain, visit the Auto Art Show displaying works of nationally
renowned automotive artists. The show is held at The Depot, which is the
historic train depot at the edge of town, and at the track.
Spectators can view cars in the paddock area pre-race, and from a variety
of other outstanding vantage points as well. Advance discounted ticket
packages can be purchased through August 25, 1998. Lodging and event packages
are available starting as low as $120. Kids 12 and under as low as $36.
Contact Steamboat Central Reservations at 1-800-922-2722 for lodging.
