Ford's July U.S. Sales Off 4% From Last Year's Record

5 August 1998

Ford's July U.S. Sales Off 4% From Last Year's Record; Truck Sales Up 5% to New Industry Record
DETROIT, Aug. 4 -- U.S. customers purchased or leased
343,183 cars and trucks from Ford , Mercury, Lincoln, and Jaguar
dealers in July, down 4.3% from last year's record sales month. Lower sales
to daily rental and other fleet customers more than account for the decline.
Truck sales increased 5.2% to 214,235 -- a new industry record for July. Car
sales declined 16.8% to 128,948.
"We're pleased that July sales held up well," said Bob Rewey, Ford's group
vice president of marketing, sales, and service. "Understandably, consumers
weren't able to sustain the blistering pace that was set in May and June, but
July sales continued to be strong, particularly for trucks."
U.S. customers kept Ford's pickups and sport utility vehicles No. 1 in the
market. In July, over 80,000 customers took delivery of a new Ford F-Series
pickup, breaking a sales record that had stood for 20 years. F-Series sales
were up 25 percent from a year ago. With five months still remaining in 1998,
almost half a million U.S. customers have purchased Ford's versatile, "built
tough", full-size pickup. Ranger, Ford's tough compact pickup, also had a
strong month with sales of 28,056, up five percent from a year ago. One out
of every five Ford Rangers purchased in July was a four-door Super Cab -- a
feature that went into production in April.
Consumers also purchased a record number of both the Ford Explorer and
Expedition in July. Explorer sales of 35,096 were up three percent and
Expedition sales of 20,271 were up 28 percent. In 1998, over 400,000
customers have selected an Explorer, Expedition, Mercury Mountaineer or
Lincoln Navigator to meet the demands of their active lifestyles.
"Quality products that offer consumers go-anywhere, do-anything
versatility and great value are driving the market," said Rewey. "These
attributes are the imperatives for almost every Ford Motor Company product on
the road, and on the drawing board."
Of course, for some vehicles, versatility has to ride in the back seat.
In July, the all-new Mercury Cougar, with its unique "edge" styling, was on
the prowl -- and set a new sales record. "The Cougar is creating a huge stir
in Mercury showrooms," said Rewey. "Our Mercury dealers haven't seen this
many Gen-Xers since ... well, ever. Cougar embodies the distinctive product
design and focus underlying Lincoln Mercury's move to its new California
headquarters."
Ford Division's two-door coupes also were hot sellers in July. Mustang
sales increased for the 13th month in a row and Escort ZX2 had its second best
sales month ever.
Customers took delivery of 1,867 Jaguars in July, up 24 percent from a
year ago. In the first seven months of 1998, Jaguar sales were up 18 percent.
In a move related to July's strong sales to retail customers, Ford
increased its third quarter North American production schedules by 10,000
vehicles.
