Dressel Named to Head Chrysler MuseumAUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 4 -- Barry Dressel, the former director of the Turks and Caicos National Museum in the British West Indies and the former Director of the Detroit Historical Department, has been named Manager of the Chrysler Historical Museum. Dressel will assume responsibilities this week. The Chrysler Historical Museum is scheduled to open mid-1999 and is the first dedicated, on-site museum built by any American automobile company. Approximately 75 vehicles will be on display along with special artifacts dating back to the 1920s. "We recognized Barry's solid expertise in the area of museum management and knew his considerable experience would fit nicely with the museum objectives," said Arthur "Bud" Liebler, Vice President Marketing and Chairman of the Museum Board of Directors. Dressel has worked as a consultant and served as the director of several nationally acclaimed museums including the Berkshire Museum in Massachusetts, Baltimore City Life Museum and the Detroit Historical Department. While working for the Detroit Historical Department, he was responsible for overseeing five Detroit museums including the Detroit Historical Museum, Dossin Great Lakes Museum and the Historic Fort Wayne. He also coordinated the original planning of the "Motor City" exhibit in the Detroit Historical Museum which includes an assembly line from the General Motors Fleetwood Plant. Dressel has written several papers on museum operations and exhibits and been published in a variety of museum publications. He received his B.A. and a graduate degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., and he has completed coursework toward a Ph.D. at the University of Delaware. Dressel is married with two children and resides in Auburn Hills, Mich. The museum will be located on a 10-acre site at the southeast corner of Featherstone Road and Squirrel Road near Chrysler's headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich.
