Mitsubishi Motors' July Sales Reach 15,474 Units
Company's Sales Expected to `Wake Up' with All-New Advertising Campaign and
                       Launch of Galant Mid-Size Sedan

CYPRESS, Calif., Aug. 3 -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America,
Inc. has announced July sales of 15,474, a 9 percent decline in its monthly
sales compared to 1997 figures. Bright spots for the Company include a 16
percent increase in sales of its Montero Sport mid-size sport utility vehicle
and continued strong sales of the Eclipse sports coupe and convertible.
Mitsubishi Motors officially began selling its all-new Galant this
weekend, and its new "wake up and drive" national advertising campaign began
last week. As the Company continued to clear its inventory of the current
Galant to prepare for the new model, sales of the mid-size sedan climbed 9
percent.
"As we've prepared for the launch of the all-new Galant, we've relied on
regional advertising to promote our products," said Pierre Gagnon, executive
vice president and chief operating officer. "Even so, sales of our Eclipse
have remained strong in a very slow sports coupe market, and our Montero Sport
continues to bring sales increases to our retailers month after month."
Gagnon noted that the "wake up and drive" campaign -- Mitsubishi Motors'
first national advertising campaign by Deutsch, Inc., of New York and Marina
del Rey, Calif. -- should significantly increase consumers' awareness and
positive perceptions of not only the Galant, but of the entire Mitsubishi
Motors' line.
"The launch of the all-new Galant is not only a wake up call for sedan
buyers, it should also bring a significant increase in dealership traffic and
subsequently our sales for the rest of the year," he added.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles,
including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
