New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. and UAW Local 2244 Reach tentative Agreement for New Contract
FREMONT, Calif.--Aug. 1, 1998--New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) and the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2244 have reached a tentative agreement for a new contract, Iwao Itoh, President and CEO of NUMMI, announced early Saturday morning.
"For the last 14 years, NUMMI and the UAW have been partners in our company's development and progress. Through this agreement, we are taking another step forward toward deepening and strengthening our relationship. With this partnership, based on a common purpose and shared vision for our company and our team members, the future of NUMMI is brighter than ever," Itoh said.
Terms of the tentative agreement will be withheld pending a ratification vote by the members of UAW Local 2244.
The UAW has tentatively scheduled the ratification vote for Tuesday, Aug. 4. The current contract, which was set to expire at 12 midnight, Friday, July 31, has been extended through Tuesday by agreement of the two parties.
New United Motor, a joint venture between Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors, was established in 1984. The company employs 4,600 team members, including 3,700 UAW members, and produces a total of 360,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks, Toyota Corollas and Chevrolet Prizms annually.
