AUSTIN, Texas--July 27, 1998--Motorola has received certification to the exacting requirements of the QS-9000 Quality System Standard of the automotive industry as needed by Ford, Chrysler, GM, Bosch, Siemens, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes and others.
The QS-9000 certification was awarded to Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) and includes the Transportation Systems Group, the automotive operations of the Semiconductor Components Group, and SPS manufacturing operations involved in automotive products.
In total, 40 different plant sites in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Japan representing some 25,000 employees were audited and certified by an accredited third-party quality systems assessor, Lloyds Registrar Quality Assurance (LRQA). Motorola SPS is the largest semiconductor supplier to the world automotive industry for the last 30 years and is the first major U.S. semiconductor company to achieve QS-9000 status.
"As the No. 1 semiconductor supplier to the automotive market, Motorola is in a unique position to understand the needs of its customers. We are very pleased that SPS has achieved QS-9000 certification and is enhancing its commitment to helping its customers in the automotive industry succeed," said Dale Misczynski, Motorola corporate vice president, director of quality.
For a company that drives quality through its Six Sigma quality program, the strong initiative to achieve this certification further underscored Motorola's commitment to quality as it involved an extensive investment in companywide resources.
"SPS is dedicated to delivering world-class products to the automotive industry, and QS-9000 certification is a key accomplishment in establishing a quality system that can produce those products," said C.D. Tam, senior vice president and general manager of the transportation systems group.
"The investment in the systems and execution necessary to achieve QS-9000 for our broad portfolio of products is a demonstration of that commitment to the quality standards of our customers. This quality foundation will be the base from which we deliver DigitalDNA building blocks to the transportation systems of the future."
The formal ceremony for Motorola to receive the QS-9000 Certification from LRQA was held at a luncheon at the Michigan Speedway on Saturday, July 25. The ceremony was in conjunction with the Michigan U.S. 500, which is the 12th race of the 1998 FedEx Championship Series. As the world's No. 1 producer of embedded processors, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector offers DigitalDNA solutions which enable its customers in the consumer, networking and computing, transportation and wireless communications markets, to create new business opportunities. Motorola's semiconductor sales were $8.0 billion in l997.
In the global marketplace, Motorola also is one of the leading providers of wireless communications, advanced electronic systems, components and services. Major equipment businesses include cellular telephone, two-way radio, paging and data communications, personal communications, automotive, defense and space electronics, and computers. Corporate sales in 1997 were $29.8 billion.
