WH Announces Appointment of Ronn Claussen as V.P. and Treasurer

    CHICAGO, July 15 -- Whitman Corporation announced
today that Ronn L. Claussen has been named Vice President - Treasurer.  He
will be responsible for the capital structure, financing, cash management,
credit, and risk management for Whitman and Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers,
Whitman's principal operating company.
    Before joining Whitman, Mr. Claussen served as Assistant Treasurer of
Newell Company, where he has spent his entire business career.
    Mr. Claussen graduated from Western Illinois University in 1981, and
received his MBA from Northern Illinois University in 1990.
