Dana Corporation Unveils Rolling Chassis Module in BrazilCURITIBA, Brazil, July 7 -- Dana Corporation today unveiled its new Rolling Chassis(TM) module in conjunction with the dedication of Chrysler Corporation's new Dodge Dakota assembly plant in Brazil. The Rolling Chassis is the most complex module supplied to Chrysler. Designed for Brazilian-made Dakota pickup trucks, the module incorporates more than 200 components, including a frame, rear axle, driveshaft, suspension, steering system, brakes, fuel tank, electrical circuits, and wheels and tires (thus the term "Rolling Chassis"). Developed to streamline the vehicle assembly process and satisfy local content requirements, the Rolling Chassis is the first application of its kind to be used in volume pickup truck production anywhere in the world. In tandem with Chrysler's Extended Enterprise(TM) concept, Dana integrates approximately 70 other suppliers in the production of the Rolling Chassis. Chrysler's Extended Enterprise concept "extends" the business relationships of the vehicle maker's suppliers to the mutual benefit of Chrysler and its suppliers. The Rolling Chassis is assembled at Dana's new 76,000 square-foot facility located less than three miles from Chrysler's Campo Largo Dakota assembly plant. Upon delivery to Chrysler -- within 1.8 hours of order -- Rolling Chassis are literally "rolled" onto the auto-maker's assembly line as one component. Chrysler's $315 million Campo Largo plant is the company's first pickup truck plant outside North America. The facility occupies 266,133 square feet and has a total capacity to produce 40,000 vehicles a year. Production of the Dakota pickup, which will be assembled in standard and extended (Club Cab) versions, will begin at a rate of 12,000 units a year (approximately 5,000 units will be built by the end of 1998). Dana Corporation is a global leader in the engineering, manufacture, and distribution of products and services for the automotive, engine, heavy truck, off-highway, industrial, and leasing markets.
