Volkswagen's June Sales Up 90.8 Percent - Best Monthly Sales Figure in 17 Years - Best Jetta June Sales in HistoryAUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 3 -- With sales of 24,907, Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its best June sales results since 1980 and best month overall since 1981. This figure represents a 90.8 percent increase over last year's June figure of 13,057. Through the first half of 1998, Volkswagen has sold 104,081 new cars, up 50.2 percent over the same period in 1997 when sales were 69,294. These year- to-date results represent the best first half results for the German automaker in the U.S. since 1986. With sales of 7,466, June also represented the best sales month to date for Volkswagen's popular New Beetle, which went on sale this past March. So far, Volkswagen has sold a total of 17,431 New Beetles in the U.S. The German automaker's Jetta once again led all Volkswagen models with June sales of 10,577, an increase of 23.3 percent over last year's 8,578, and the best June sales month ever for this top-selling European sedan. With sales of 1,798, Volkswagen's Cabrio continued to enjoy very brisk demand with its best June results in history. This figure, versus last year's mark of 1,105, represents a 62.7 percent increase. Volkswagen's Passat also celebrated its best June sales ever with 2,811 sold versus last year's mark of 1,143, an increase of 146 percent.
