Success of Mobil Speedpass Prompts Major Expansion of Innovative System -- Fast Gas Technology Draws 1.5 Million Users --
FAIRFAX, Va.--July 2, 1998--Mobil Corp. announced Thursday a major expansion of Mobil Speedpass, the program that allows customers to purchase gasoline without opening wallets or purses for credit cards or cash.Starting on July 6, an additional 900 locations nationwide will be operational, bringing the total number of Mobil stations equipped with Speedpass technology to over 3300.
In the 20 cities where Mobil Speedpass was introduced last year, hundreds of new locations have been outfitted with Speedpass technology, offering added convenience to the over 1.5 million motorists already enrolled in the program.
In addition, Speedpass will be introduced in Dallas/Fort Worth, Milwaukee and Las Vegas on July 6 as well, completing the roll-out of the program to all of Mobil's major gasoline marketing areas in the United States.
"The overwhelming response of motorists has encouraged us to expand the Speedpass program to as many locations as possible," states Brian Baker, Mobil's chief operating officer, North American Marketing and Refining.
"Speedpass will now be available at locations where the vast majority of our customers fill up, helping us to achieve our goal of providing the fastest, friendliest, cleanest service stations available.
"All you have to do is stop at a Speedpass pump, fill up and go. It's the fastest way to get gas, and just one of the ways we're proving every day that we give our customers the energy to make a difference."
In addition to offering faster service for motorists, early analysis indicates that the use of Speedpass builds stronger loyalty and results in increased purchases per customer.
How It Works
Motorists enrolled in the Mobil Speedpass program use a miniature electronic transponder device attached to their key chain or affixed to the rear window of their car. There is no cost to consumers for the Speedpass transponder and no service charge for using the new technology to fill up.
Similar to state-of-the-art electronic payment systems used to reduce waiting time at highway tollbooths, Speedpass technology employs radio frequency signals. The electronic system located in the pump "talks" (communicates) with miniature transponder devices located in the car tag or key tag.
Together, these electronic devices provide quick, simple access to gasoline by automatically charging fuel purchases to a designated credit card. Customers can designate any of the wide range of credit cards that Mobil accepts when they enroll in the Speedpass program.
Drivers must enroll to acquire a Speedpass. There are several ways to enroll:
1) By phoning 1-800-459-2266; 2) Through the Mobil Speedpass Internet web site at
www.mobil.com/speedpass; 3) By completing an enrollment form available at any
participating Mobil service station.
