Chrysler Sets All-Time Month, Quarter and First-Half Sales Records
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 1 -- Chrysler Corporation
announced all-time U.S. vehicle sales records for any month, quarter and first
half in the Company's history. June sales of 252,485 vehicles is an increase
of 10 percent over the same period a year ago and surpasses the previous
all-time monthly record of 250,031 units set last month. Second-quarter sales
of 723,318 units are up 15 percent from a year ago and beats the previous best
of 704,586 units set during the second quarter of 1996. The first half of
1998 was also an all-time record for Chrysler, posting 1,301,618 units,
surpassing the 1,295,892 units posted during the first half of 1996.
In total, 13 sales records were established for the month of June and 13
sales records were set for the second quarter.
"Having back-to-back months with sales exceeding a quarter million units
is just a phenomenal achievement for Chrysler Corporation," said James P.
Holden, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "It's a clear
indication of how strong the market is -- and how popular our products are
with consumers."
For the month, total car sales of 77,778 vehicles were up 3 percent over
June 1997. Individual monthly records were set by Chrysler Concorde (6,472
units, a 54 percent increase), Plymouth Breeze (6,932 units, a 48 percent
increase), and Dodge Stratus (12,646 units, a 21 percent increase). Other
highlights include Chrysler Cirrus (4,287 units, a 24 percent increase),
Plymouth Neon (8,864 units, a nine percent increase) and Dodge Neon (14,090
units, a 17 percent increase).
Total truck sales tallied 174,707 units, a 14 percent increase over the
previous record of 147,276 units one year ago. Dodge Truck record sales of
104,354 units were up 28 percent over last year, with individual monthly
records set for Dodge Ram Pickup (36,755 units, an 18 percent increase) and
Dodge Dakota (13,237 units, a 10 percent increase). Dodge Caravan sales were
up 13 percent to 34,608 units, an all-time monthly record. Total sport
utility vehicle sales of 55,988 units were up 19 percent over the same period
a year ago, and minivan sales of 61,189 units were up 12 percent over last
year.
"All indicators point to a great year for Chrysler -- perhaps an all-time
record," said Holden. "People have decided that now is the time to buy and
we're extremely pleased that they're coming our way."
