Toyota Announces Best-Ever Second Quarter Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., July 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc. announced best-ever second-quarter sales today of 361,733 Toyota and
Lexus vehicles. The company also reported best-ever June sales of 117,043
vehicles, up 17.2 percent over last year. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales
total 635,266, an increase of 1.0 percent compared to the same period last
year.
Both TMS sales divisions had increases over last year. The Toyota
Division recorded sales of 104,181 units, up 12.2 percent from last June. For

with June sales of 12,862, an increase of 82.5 percent over the same period
last year, and CYTD sales of 68,368, up 54.4 percent.
"With consumer confidence at a 29-year high and interest rates stable for

industry," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president and chairman of the
Association of International Automobile Manufacturers.

Corolla also was up 23.0 percent, to 23,408, with total Toyota Division car

The Lexus Division's best-ever June was due in part to strong sales of the

the division's flagship sedan, the LS 400, selling 1,605 units, up 26.9

to 1,458, and total light truck sales of 34,535, up 10.9 percent over June
1997. Strong Sienna sales of 6,514 units helped Toyota record a best-ever
June for van.
Total compact pickup sales were up 12.0 percent in June, with the Toyota
Tacoma 2WD up 20.7 percent, to 6,676, and the Tacoma 4WD pickup posting sales
