Toyota Announces Best-Ever Second Quarter SalesTORRANCE, Calif., July 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. announced best-ever second-quarter sales today of 361,733 Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The company also reported best-ever June sales of 117,043 vehicles, up 17.2 percent over last year. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 635,266, an increase of 1.0 percent compared to the same period last year. Both TMS sales divisions had increases over last year. The Toyota Division recorded sales of 104,181 units, up 12.2 percent from last June. For the third-consecutive month, the Lexus Division reported a best-ever month with June sales of 12,862, an increase of 82.5 percent over the same period last year, and CYTD sales of 68,368, up 54.4 percent. "With consumer confidence at a 29-year high and interest rates stable for 15 months, June turned out to be a pretty darn good month for Toyota and the industry," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president and chairman of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers. Camry recorded its best June ever with sales of 39,344, up 23.0 percent. Corolla also was up 23.0 percent, to 23,408, with total Toyota Division car sales up 12.9 percent over June 1997. The Lexus Division's best-ever June was due in part to strong sales of the all-new RX 300, which totaled 3,974. The GS 300 recorded sales of 1,529, with the division's flagship sedan, the LS 400, selling 1,605 units, up 26.9 percent. Toyota also recorded best-ever June sales of Land Cruiser, up 45.4 percent to 1,458, and total light truck sales of 34,535, up 10.9 percent over June 1997. Strong Sienna sales of 6,514 units helped Toyota record a best-ever June for van. Total compact pickup sales were up 12.0 percent in June, with the Toyota Tacoma 2WD up 20.7 percent, to 6,676, and the Tacoma 4WD pickup posting sales of 5,623, up 3.1 percent. Sales of North American-built vehicles increased 16.0 percent, to 73,891 units compared to June 1997, and represented 63.1 percent of total June sales.
