Chevron Satisfied With Resolution of Falsified Environmental Reports CaseOAKLAND, Calif., June 25 -- Chevron Products Company said it is satisfied with today's resolution of a two-year investigation into the falsification of environmental reports for three former Bay Area service station sites. Alterations in test data were apparently made by a former Chevron employee, who pleaded nolo contendre to three misdemeanor charges in Berkeley Municipal Court today, and was sentenced. Another Chevron employee, who was assigned the files after the first employee left the company, discovered the alterations in test data. Chevron immediately reported the discrepancies to the proper government agencies and began a thorough investigation with independent experts. Chevron has cooperated fully with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office in its investigation. "The alterations to the reports did not affect the safety of these sites," said Jeff Hartwig, manager of Chevron's site assessment and remediation group. "But the numbers were changed and that is not acceptable to us under any circumstances or for any reason. We have thoroughly investigated the sites, along with our own internal processes, and are confident that these were isolated incidents involving one past employee and that the properties are safe." The test results involve three former service station sites (two in Berkeley and one in San Lorenzo), which have been cleaned and monitored over a period of time. It is standard operating procedure to conduct environmental tests to ensure the safety of closed service stations, and Chevron uses independent, state licensed consultants and laboratories to do much of this testing.
