Bethlehem Steel Receives Third Consecutive GM Supplier AwardBETHLEHEM, Pa., June 17 -- Bethlehem Steel employees today hosted executives of General Motors, state and community leaders and local GM dealers as the steelmaker celebrated receiving GM's Supplier of the Year Award for the third consecutive year. Congratulating Bethlehem for being the "best of the best," John L. Stiles, executive director of GM's metallic worldwide purchasing, said, "You won the award because you satisfied our toughest critics in purchasing, supplier quality, engineering and manufacturing." Mr. Stiles added that Bethlehem is one of 182 suppliers from among GM's worldwide supplier base of 30,000 to win the coveted award for 1997. In accepting the award on behalf of "the entire Bethlehem family," chairman and CEO Hank Barnette said, "The General Motors award gives all of us on the Bethlehem team a great sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that our performance truly served our customers' needs. Increasing the value of our company for our stockholders is our overall objective, and the primary way we will get there is by serving our customers. It takes total focus, determination and dedication on the part of all our employees." Bethlehem was the only supplier of flat-rolled steel in the world to receive the 1997 award and one of only 36 suppliers to become a three-time winner. "Our Vision is to be the Premier Steel Company," said Mr. Barnette, "and winning the GM Supplier of the Year Award for the third straight year is clear evidence that we are moving toward achieving that Vision." The several hundred guests and participants who gathered at Bethlehem Steel's Martin Tower headquarters included Pennsylvania Secretary of Transportation Brad Mallory, Bethlehem Mayor Don Cunningham, Tom Mohr, chief legislative assistant for Congressman Paul McHale, other public officials, business and community leaders and former officers and directors of Bethlehem. Today's celebration included a picnic for employees and a display of the 39 GM vehicles containing Bethlehem Steel. Also on display was a prototype of the weight-saving UltraLight Steel Auto Body (ULSAB), developed by a worldwide consortium of 35 steel producers including Bethlehem. Bethlehem Steel's Burns Harbor Division furnishes sheet steel for parts that go into GM vehicles. Celebrations at Burns Harbor's operations in western New York and northwestern Indiana will take place tomorrow.
