Work Stoppages At Delphi Automotive Systems Discussed

12 June 1998

Spokesperson Statement Regarding Work Stoppages At Delphi Automotive Systems Flint East Site And GM Flint Metal Center
FLINT, Mich., June 11 -- Production at the Delphi Automotive
Systems Flint East site was interrupted today (Thursday, June 11, 1998) at
7:01 p.m. due to a strike by UAW Local 651.
At the Delphi Automotive Systems site, we have been working with the UAW
for months to address competitive pressures facing this site and were
optimistic that we could reach common ground.
The work stoppage at the GM Flint Metal Center is in its seventh day today
with the main issue being non-competitive work practices in the engine cradle
area.
In both cases, we are very disappointed that the UAW took strike actions,
which negatively impact its membership and will have a ripple effect on
thousands of GM employees, vehicle consumers, supplier facilities,
stockholders and communities.
We have committed, talented people and we encourage the union to join
management leadership at both facilities to urgently reach settlements that
help us effectively work with them to improve GM's competitive position in the
marketplace.
