Volkswagen Reports May Sales - Best in 11 Years - Record Sales for Passat Model

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 3 -- With sales of 19,046,
Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its best May sales results since 1987.
This figure represents a 38.5 percent increase over last year's May figure of
13,754.
    For the year, Volkswagen is well ahead of last year's pace.  Year-to-date,
Volkswagen has sold 79,174 new cars, up 40.8 percent over the same period in
1997 when sales were 56,237.
    May represented another record sales month for Volkswagen's mid-size
Passat model and soft-top Cabrio.
     Passat enjoyed its best sales month ever with 3,734 sold in May, versus
last year's mark of 1,364, an increase of 173.8 percent.
    Cabrio sales last month were 1,802, an increase of 79.1 percent over last
May's figure of 1,006.  It was the Cabrio's best May sales month since 1984.
