Jaguar Sales on a Roll in the U.S.
MAHWAH, N.J., June 3 -- Strong sales in May helped Jaguar
Cars continue its strongest start ever in the United States. Year-to-date
sales of more than 9,000 cars improved 18 percent compared with the same
period a year ago and exceed Jaguar's previous best five-month start in 1986.
Sales for the month of May totaled 1,936, up 21 percent compared with last
year. Sports car sales totaled 673, setting a record for the month of May.
Sedan sales of 1,263 increased 36 percent compared with the same period last
year.
"May marks the seventh consecutive month that we've had a year-over-year
sales increase," said Stephen T. Odell, Jaguar Cars vice president of sales
and marketing. "What a reflection this is of Jaguar's growing competitiveness
in the market and of customers' increasing confidence in our quality."
The award-wining Jaguar XK8 convertible and coupe have continued Jaguar's
sports car heritage. The XK8 features the 4.0-liter AJ-V8 engine as well as
Jaguar's distinctive styling both inside and out. Jaguar introduced the AJ-V8
engine in its sedans for the 1998 model year. In addition, the cars' elegant
wood and leather interior was redesigned to accommodate upgrades such as side
airbags. Despite equipment additions to both its sedans and sports cars for
1998, the U.S. company maintained 1997 suggested retail prices.
In Canada, Jaguar sales totaled 112 for the month of May, up 7 percent
compared with the same month last year. Year-to-date sales of 560 vehicles
were up 27 percent compared with the same period last year.
