Hoosier State Shows Slight Decrease In Plants, Slight Increase in JobsEVANSTON, Ill., June 3 -- The number of manufacturing plants in Indiana decreased by 55 plants, or .46%, within the past twelve months. The statewide total now stands at 11,945 plants, according to the 1998 Indiana Manufacturers Directory, published by Manufacturers' News, Inc., Evanston, Ill. Indiana gained 557 plants and lost 612 due to closings, mergers, and relocations out-of-state, for a net decrease of 55 plants since the 1997 edition was published a year ago. The number of Indiana industrial jobs reflected in the directory increased by 34, or .11%, resulting in a total of 759,472 jobs listed the 1998 edition. Five of Indiana's top ten industrial cities showed an increase in the number of manufacturing firms listed in the Directory in the past year, while five decreased. Indianapolis leads Indiana's industry with 1,649 plants, showing a gain of 60 and a loss of 95, revealing an overall net decrease of 35 plants. Ranked second with 645 plants, Elkhart gained 33 and lost 42, a net decrease of nine. Third-ranked Fort Wayne, with 610 plants, gained 37 and lost 26 for an increase of 11 plants. Fourth-ranked Evansville, with 411 plants, gained 24 and lost 15, resulting in an increase of nine. Fifth-ranked South Bend, with 324 plants, gained 15 and lost 23, for a net decrease of eight plants, according to the 1998 Indiana Manufacturers Directory. Sixth-ranked Mishawaka showed a gain of 11 plants and a loss of eight, resulting in a total of 211 plants, a net increase of three. Seventh-ranked Muncie, with 210 plants, gained nine and lost 13, a decrease of four plants. Ranked eighth in Indiana with 177 plants, Terre Haute decreased its total by three from last year, having gained six plants and lost nine. Ninth-ranked Bloomington, with 164 plants, gained 11 and lost five during the past 12 months, showing an increase of six plants. Columbus, ranked tenth with 146 plants, gained eight and lost seven, resulting in an increase of one plant, according to the 1998 Indiana Manufacturers Directory. More than half of Indiana's manufacturers fall within five types of industries. Industrial Machinery & Equipment firms comprise the largest industrial group in Indiana with 2,102 manufacturing establishments, or 17.60% of the statewide total listed in the 1998 directory. Metal Fabricating is the second largest manufacturing category with 1,377 such plants, accounting for 11.53% of Indiana's industrial community. Third-ranked Printing and Publishing, comprises 11.04% of the state total with 1,319 related plants located throughout the Directory. Lumber & Wood Products is the fourth largest industrial group, with 797 such firms representing 6.67%, of the total Directory. Rubber & Plastic Products ranks fifth, with 725 firms, or 6.07% of Indiana's industry. Combined, the five categories represent 52.91% of Indiana's industrial universe. 33,976 executives are listed in the Directory by name and title. A total of 9,818 manufacturing firms report fax numbers. The Directory lists annual sales figures for 10,448 companies. Web and e-mail addresses are listed for 2,551 companies.
