AMETEK Specialty Metal Products Chosen for Demanding Automotive Applications
PAOLI, Pa., June 2 -- A proprietary high-alloy steel powder
made by AMETEK Specialty Metal Products (SMP) has been chosen for production
of the camshaft lobes in the 4.7 liter, V-8 engines in the Jeep Grand Cherokee
and Durango sport utility vehicles from Chrysler Corp., beginning in Fall
1998.
The camshafts, which will be produced by Federal-Mogul Assembled
Camshafts, Grand Haven, Mich., will be the first composite metal camshafts
with powder metal lobes ever used in a Chrysler engine. Metal powder for the
high-volume application will be produced at AMETEK's suburban Pittsburgh
manufacturing facility.
The camshaft lobes on Chrysler's new line of 3.7 liter, V-6 engines used
in light-duty trucks, such as sport utility vehicles and pickups, also are
expected to be made of metal powder beginning in 2000.
In addition, AMETEK SMP will supply the metal powder used to manufacture
exhaust system mounting flanges found on a range of 1999 model automobiles.
Flanges produced from metal powder offer excellent corrosion resistance and
improved performance and are especially suited for the harsh operating
conditions that exist in high-efficiency, high-temperature exhaust systems.
Pursuing its market expansion growth strategy, SMP is gaining automotive
industry recognition as stainless steel and other high-alloy powders
increasingly are specified by automotive manufacturers for critical parts,
where the design-in benefits of powder metallurgy (P/M) component part
fabrication technology is cost effective, compared with other part making
techniques. Although there are nearly 40 pounds of P/M parts in the average
U.S.-made automobile, it has been only in the last two years that stainless
steel and other high-alloy powders have gained significant importance to auto
makers.
To meet the demand for stainless steel powder and expand its position as a
leading supplier to the metal powder industry, AMETEK doubled its production
capacity for 300 Series Ultra(TM) and Motor Vehicle Series (MVS(TM))400 high-
quality, stainless steel and high-alloy powders in 1997. That expansion
increased the size of AMETEK's Eighty Four, Pa., manufacturing facility to
more than 100,000 square feet. It also enhanced AMETEK's ability to be a
just-in-time supplier to the powder metal industry.
AMETEK SMP is a market leader and innovator in the field of specialty
metal powders and alloys. Its metal powders are used in a variety of
industries, including automotive, appliance, telecommunications, marine, and
general industrial applications. In addition to its stainless steel and high-
alloy powders, AMETEK SMP produces a variety of nickel, nickel-iron, and
cobalt alloys, metal strip, wire, clad, and composite products at its
manufacturing plants in Eighty Four, Pa., and Wallingford, Conn.
AMETEK SMP is a division of AMETEK, Inc. , a leading global
manufacturer of electric motors and electronic instruments with operations in
North America, Europe, and Asia.
AMETEK's Corporate Growth Plan is based on Four Key Strategies:
Operational Excellence, New Products, Strategic Acquisitions & Joint Ventures,
and Global & Market Expansion. Its objective is double-digit percentage
earnings per share growth and superior return on total capital.
