Volvo Wins Unique Advertising Honor
21 May 1998
Volvo Wins Unique Advertising HonorROCKLEIGH, N.J., May 21 -- The Clio Awards are among the oldest and most respected awards in the International Advertising world. Traditionally, they are presented to advertising agencies for a particular piece of work or campaign. This year, for the first time in the 39-year history of the Clios, an award was given to an advertiser. "Advertiser of the Year" honors were given to Volvo Cars United Kingdom and Volvo Cars of North America. The awards were presented in recognition of five years or continuous creative excellence in print and television. On hand at the May 14, 1998 Clio Awards Gala in New York's Alice Tully Hall were Craig Fabian of Volvo UK and Bob Austin of Volvo Cars NA. The twin honors capped off a three hour ceremony, which is attended by the elite of the advertising world. Bob Austin, Director of Marketing Communication for Volvo Cars NA, said it was a great honor for Volvo to be the first brand ever to receive this recognition. "It is not about one ad, or one campaign, but 5 years of excellent work," he stated. "It is a tribute to the efforts of all of my Volvo colleagues and all of our partners at Messner, Vetere, Berger, McNamee, Schmetterer." In both the US and the UK, Volvo has a relatively modest market share, yet the image of Volvo is powerful, clear, and motivating. In no small part, the company's excellent advertising has contributed to this Image. Virtually everyone knows that Volvo is known for safety and durability in its cars. Many much larger automakers envy the clarity of the Volvo brand.
