Trak Auto Corporation Announces Sales
LANDOVER, Md., May 20 -- Trak Auto Corporation
announced sales for the 13 weeks ended May 2, 1998 decreased 35.9% to
$53.1 million compared to $81.6 million for the weeks ended May 3, 1997. The
decrease is primarily due to Trak Auto's sale of its California operations in
December 1997 and the closure of its Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania market on
January 31, 1998. Comparable sales (stores open more than one year) decreased
2.2% for the 13 weeks ended May 2, 1998. Sales for comparable Super Trak and
Super Trak Warehouse stores decreased 2.0%, and sales for comparable Classic
Trak stores decreased 2.8% for the 13 weeks ended May 2, 1998. Comparable
store sales decreased primarily as a result of an increased number of
competitor stores entering Trak's geographic markets decreasing Trak's per
store market share. Sales for Super Trak stores and Super Trak Warehouse
stores represented 72.6% of total sales for the 13 weeks ended May 2, 1998
compared to 68.1% for the 13 weeks ended May 3, 1997.
Trak Auto Corporation currently operates 181 stores, including 90 Super
Trak stores and 26 Super Trak Warehouse stores in Washington, DC; Richmond,
Virginia; Chicago, Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconsin and central Pennsylvania.
