United Technologies Appoints Tesfaye Aklilu Vice President, QualityHARTFORD, Conn., May 13 -- Tesfaye Aklilu has been appointed vice president, quality, at United Technologies Corp., reporting to George David, chairman and chief executive officer. For the past three years, Aklilu has been vice president, quality and business process effectiveness, at Pratt & Whitney. Previously, he served on the operations research faculty at Babson College and, for 16 years, in information systems and process management at Xerox Corporation. He also has international experience, principally with the United Nations as a management consultant to African companies. "This appointment recognizes gains in product quality across the corporation and, as well, how far we have yet to go," said David in announcing the appointment. "We have seen what rigorous quality improvement methods can do for us, division by division, and we must share and reinforce these behaviors across UTC," he said. "Tes will lead this activity for us." As part of his new responsibilities, Aklilu will lead the deployment of Pratt & Whitney's ACE quality program (Achieving Competitive Excellence) in every plant and office across UTC. He also will launch Ito University, a quality training initiative intended to capture formally the teachings of Yuzuru Ito, UTC's quality advisor. Aklilu will co-chair the UTC Quality Council with Mike Ratchford, vice president, quality, at Hamilton Standard, and the UTC Manufacturing Council, with Louis Chenevert, executive vice president, operations, at Pratt & Whitney. Aklilu earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering and industrial management, respectively, and a Ph.D. in operations research, all from Oklahoma State University.
