Stewart & Stevenson's Truck Manufacturing Facility Receives ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification

    HOUSTON, May 6 -- Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc.
, Tactical Vehicle Systems Division (TVS), a leading
manufacturer of military tactical vehicles has received ISO 9001
certification.  The certification is by ABS Quality Evaluations, Inc.,
Houston, Texas, an independent, accredited, third party registrar.
    Certification covers the complete cycle from product design and
development to manufacturing to field service.
    The comprehensive ISO 9001 level certification, granted in the United
States to companies that establish and meet international quality system
standards, was created by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO).  ISO standards are administered in the United States by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Quality
(ASQ).
    Mr. LaRoy Hammer, Group Vice President states, "The best measure of

the highest quality military tactical vehicle in the world."  TVS produces a
Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) in one of the most modern truck
assembly plants in the United States.  TVS is the prime contractor to the
United States Army for its FMTV fleet requirements.  The company will complete
the first multi-year contract for 11,000 trucks in November 1998.  TVS is
currently in final negotiations on a second contract for an additional
9,000 vehicles to be built between 1999 and 2004.  The United States Army has
a total medium fleet requirement of over 82,000 vehicles to be built over a
20 to 25 year period.
