Chrysler Europe Sets April Record

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 5 -- Chrysler International reported
today that April sales of vehicles sold outside of North America totaled
17,713 units, down 10 percent from 19,761 units for the same period one year
ago.
    Chrysler Europe set an all-time April record with sales of 9,695 units, a
five percent increase over the previous record of 9,269 units sold in April
1997.  Germany led sales in that region with 2,006 units sold, a 10 percent
increase over the same period a year ago and marking only the third time ever
that more than 2,000 units per month were sold in that country.  Other
individual European market highlights include Belgium, up 41 percent with 536
units sold; the Netherlands, up 37 percent with 613 units sold; and Spain, up
23 percent with 1,360 units sold.
    The Asia-Pacific region was down 39 percent with 3,218 units sold, however
sales in Japan increased 15 percent (824 units) over the same period a year
ago.  Although sales in Latin America were down three percent with 3,802 units
sold, Brazil showed a 29 percent increase (1,043 units) for the month.  Middle
East/Africa reported a 23 percent decline in monthly sales, with 998 units
sold.
    For the year, Chrysler International sales are down nine percent with
68,556 units sold compared to 75,368 units sold during the same period one
year ago.
