SPX's Contech Business Receives GM Supplier of The Year

    MUSKEGON, Mich., May 5 -- SPX Corporation today
announced its Contech division has been selected as one of General Motors
Suppliers of the Year for 1997.  Contech supplies precision
aluminum die-cast components to General Motors for use in steering
applications.
    "Contech demonstrated that they are among the 'Best of the Best' suppliers
for complex die-castings," said Harold R. Kutner, GM's vice president for
Worldwide Purchasing and North American Production Control & Logistics.
"Contech is truly globally competitive and, by virtue of this award, is
recognized as a worldwide leader in product development, technology,
manufacturing, continuous improvement, value and most importantly, quality,"
added Kutner.
    General Motors Worldwide Purchasing presents the GM Supplier of the Year
awards to recognize supplier companies worldwide who exceed specific
performance standards in quality, service and price.  Teams of purchasing,
quality, engineering and manufacturing experts from GM operations around the
world select the companies to be recognized.  These teams reviewed supplier
performance in quality, service and price during the 1997 calendar year.
