Mitsubishi Motors Announces April Sales

Mitsubishi Motors' Eclipse is Sales Leader for April; Company's Sports Coupe and Convertible Sales Increase 15 PercentCYPRESS, Calif., May 1 -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA), today announced total April vehicle sales of 13,499 units, a 12 percent decline in its monthly sales compared to 1997 figures. The company's U.S.-built Eclipse sports coupe and Eclipse Spyder convertible were sales leaders for the month with sales of 4,989, an increase of 15 percent over the prior year. In addition, the Montero Sport mid-size sport utility vehicle also showed an increase of 30 percent, with sales of 3,349. "With winter ending and the sun coming out, it appears our buyers are choosing vehicles that will help them enjoy the outdoors," said Kim Custer, director of public affairs and corporate communications. "Sales increases for our Eclipse sports coupe and convertible, as well as the continued popularity of our sport utility line, are expected to continue through the summer." Another strong seller for Mitsubishi Motors in April was the Diamante luxury performance sedan. Its sales soared 63 percent over prior year, to a total of 1,406 units for the month. Custer noted the overall decline in Mitsubishi Motors' 12 percent decline in sales is due primarily to diminishing sales rate of the Galant mid-size sedan as its manufacturing facility in Illinois prepares to build an all-new version. The 1999 Galant, which has a stylish exterior design and the choice of a muscular 4-cylinder or powerful new V6 engine, is expected to significantly jump-start Mitsubishi Motors' sales in the very competitive mid-size sedan segment when it goes on sale in late July. Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles, including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
