Subaru Announces Best April Sales Month in 10 Years

    CHERRY HILL, N.J., May 1 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced its April sales figures -- best total sales for the month of
April since 1988.  Subaru recorded a sales total of 11,014 units -- up over
15 percent versus April 1997.  Overall, year-to-date 1998 totals are up
14 percent over the same period in 1997.
    The Legacy model line led sales with 6,440 units posted.  The Outback
accounted for 4,124 units of the Legacy lineup.  The newest Subaru hybrid, the
Legacy Sport Utility Sedan, once again accounted for approximately one third
of all Legacy sedan sales which totaled 1,017 units.
    The Impreza and Forester lines both had record-breaking months.  Impreza
sales totaled 1,527 units -- the best Impreza sales month of the year.
Forester had its best sales month ever with 3,047 units posted.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy

network of nearly 610 franchised dealers across the United States.  All Legacy

the U.S. market, having sold over three million vehicles.
