Siemens' Reports U.S. Sales for First Half

22 April 1998

Siemens' U.S. Sales Increase 16% in First Half; Worldwide Results Reflect Dynamic International Growth

NEW YORK, April 22 -- Sales for Siemens' U.S. business units
increased 16 percent to $4.57 billion for the first half of fiscal 1997/98
(10/01/97 - 3/31/98), over the comparable 1996/97 figure of $3.95 billion.
The increase was driven by growth in the company's transportation, components,
communications, power generation, automobile supply, and industry and
automation activities. Siemens ElectroCom L.P., which was not included in
last year's figure, added sales of $130 million to the current figure, plus
approximately 1,200 employees.
Orders increased by 10 percent to $5.01 billion over the corresponding
1996/97 period when orders were $4.55 billion. The increase was mainly due to
Siemens Automotive Corporation, Siemens Microelectronics Inc., and Siemens
Transportation Systems, Inc., where orders received grew by more than
30 percent for each company; orders for Siemens Medical Systems, Inc.
increased by almost 20 percent.
Employment at Siemens' U.S. business units grew to 49,660 at the end of
the first half compared with 47,228 for the same period last year.

    Worldwide Results:

In the first half of fiscal 1997/98, worldwide orders rose 10 percent and
sales climbed 17 percent, with positive currency translation effects
contributing two percentage points.
New orders increased to DM59.5 (1997: DM53.9) billion, with the main
growth being driven by the components segment. The Private Communication
Systems Group (PN) Automotive Systems Group (AT), Automation and Drives Group
(A&D), Osram, and Siemens Nixdorf (SNI) also achieved especially high growth
rates. International business continued to increase with orders jumping
18 percent to DM42.1 (1997: DM35.7) billion, while orders in Germany dipped
4 percent to DM17.4 (1997: DM18.2) billion.
During the first half, Siemens' worldwide sales rose to
DM52.1 (1997: DM44.7) billion. International sales surged 25 percent to
DM35.2 (1997: DM28.2) billion, while sales in Germany were up by 3 percent to
DM16.9 (1997: DM16.5) billion.
As of March 31, 1998, Siemens had approximately 398,000 employees
worldwide, compared to 386,000 recorded at the close of fiscal 1997 on
September 30, including 194,000 (197,000) in Germany, and
204,000 (189,000) outside of Germany.
Capital spending for the six months under review totaled DM3.7 billion,
nearly matching last year's level of DM3.9 billion. The figure includes
financial investments of DMO.6 (1997: DMO.7) billion.
Net income after taxes, excluding extraordinary items, was
DM1.188 (1997: DM1.080) billion, a ten percent increase attributable in part
to improvements in the industry segment and at Osram, as well as at SNI.
