Land Rover Sponsors TEAM EF in Famed Whitbread Sailing Race; British Sport Utility Manufacturer to Provide Vehicles for Shore Support

LANHAM, Md., April 20 -- One of the most widely regarded
yacht races in sailing history, the Whitbread "Round the World Race" comes to
Baltimore and Annapolis this month. Land Rover, known in the sport-utility
market for building the most rugged and capable four wheel drive vehicles, is
a proud participating sponsor of the TEAM EF racing yachts: TEAM EF Language
and TEAM EF Education.
Land Rover North America, Inc., the only vehicle manufacturer to have its
U.S. headquarters in Maryland, will provide five support vehicles to the TEAM
EF participants. Members of EF Language, which is an all male crew, and EF
Education, an all female crew, will use three Land Rover Discoverys and two
Range Rovers to move equipment and crew members around while in port.
"The Whitbread embodies the spirit of adventure and challenge that Land
Rover vehicles are famous for, and we are excited to be involved in the race's
stopovers in our home state," said Charles R. Hughes, president, Land Rover
North America, Inc.
The race began on September 21, 1997 when the nine entrants left
Southampton, England for Cape Town, South Africa. The yachts have since
visited Fremantle and Sydney, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Sao Sabastiao,
Brazil; and Ft. Lauderdale, and are expected to arrive in Baltimore on
April 22. They will return down the Chesapeake on April 30 for a short stay
in Annapolis before starting the leg to France on May 3. Upon their return
home, each boat will have logged a total of 31,000 miles, all under sail.
Land Rover is a member of the Rover Group of Companies, importing vehicles
manufactured by Land Rover, Solihull, England. The Rover Group is a wholly-
owned subsidiary of the BMW Group, Munich, Germany.
