Land Rover Sponsors TEAM EF in Famed Whitbread Sailing Race; British Sport Utility Manufacturer to Provide Vehicles for Shore SupportLANHAM, Md., April 20 -- One of the most widely regarded yacht races in sailing history, the Whitbread "Round the World Race" comes to Baltimore and Annapolis this month. Land Rover, known in the sport-utility market for building the most rugged and capable four wheel drive vehicles, is a proud participating sponsor of the TEAM EF racing yachts: TEAM EF Language and TEAM EF Education. Land Rover North America, Inc., the only vehicle manufacturer to have its U.S. headquarters in Maryland, will provide five support vehicles to the TEAM EF participants. Members of EF Language, which is an all male crew, and EF Education, an all female crew, will use three Land Rover Discoverys and two Range Rovers to move equipment and crew members around while in port. "The Whitbread embodies the spirit of adventure and challenge that Land Rover vehicles are famous for, and we are excited to be involved in the race's stopovers in our home state," said Charles R. Hughes, president, Land Rover North America, Inc. The race began on September 21, 1997 when the nine entrants left Southampton, England for Cape Town, South Africa. The yachts have since visited Fremantle and Sydney, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Sao Sabastiao, Brazil; and Ft. Lauderdale, and are expected to arrive in Baltimore on April 22. They will return down the Chesapeake on April 30 for a short stay in Annapolis before starting the leg to France on May 3. Upon their return home, each boat will have logged a total of 31,000 miles, all under sail.
