Jaguar Cars Sets First-Quarter Record
MAHWAH, N.J., April 3 -- Jaguar Cars today reported its
highest first quarter sales ever in the United States. Record total sales of
5,063 sedans and sports cars for the first three months of 1998 were
6.7 percent better than the previous record of 4,744 set in 1990. Compared
with the same period last year, total sales for the first quarter improved
12.4 percent over last year's 4,504 units.
"It's very exciting to start the year with a first-quarter record," said
Stephen T. Odell, Jaguar Cars vice president of sales and marketing. "Dealers
are reporting record showroom traffic and customers are demonstrating an
enthusiastic response to our 1998 sedans and sports cars."
In the U.S., strong demand for Jaguar's V8-powered XJ Series sedans led an
increase in March sales compared with a year ago. Sedan sales rose
43.8 percent to 1,366 for the month, with sales increases for the Jaguar
standard wheelbase XJ Sedan (up 116 percent), Vanden Plas (up 42 percent) and
the supercharged XJR (up 109 percent). Total sales of 1,943 cars for the
month were up 19.9 percent compared with March 1997.
Sales in Canada were up 101.2 percent to 167 vehicles for the month of
March. Sedan sales improved 163.3 percent to 129 units and sale of the Jaguar
XK8 sports car increased 11.8 percent to 38 cars.
