Autoliv Sells Non-Core Business UnitsSTOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 2 -- Autoliv Inc. , a worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, has sold three non-core business units which were part of the Marling Group, acquired by Autoliv in October of last year. The units, which manufacture industrial webbing for various applications, have combined annual sales of $26 million and 200 employees. The divestitures will have a marginal, positive effect on Autoliv's cash position. Collingwood Fabrics Inc., located in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, has been sold to Southern Weaving Canada, Inc. The operations of Collingwood Fabrics will be moved from the current facilities in September to create space for Autoliv's expanding seat belt webbing fabrication and other operations related to Autoliv's core business. Marling Leek Ltd. based in Leek, England, and C&S Valkenburg & Co B.V. in Scherpenzeel, The Netherlands, have been sold to Comitex Holdings. The divestitures will be accounted for as of January 1, 1998. The Marling Group is the world leader in its core business -- seat belt webbing for automobiles -- and is Autoliv's most important supplier of such webbing. Autoliv Inc. develops and manufactures automotive safety systems for all major automotive manufacturers in the world. The company has 60 wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures with close to 20,000 employees in 27 vehicle-producing countries. In addition, the company has eight technical centers around the world, including 19 test tracks, more than any other automotive safety supplier. Sales in 1997 totaled US $3.3 billion and net income US $185 million. The company's shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange , its Swedish Depositary Receipts on the Stockholm Stock Exchange (SSE: ALIV) and its stock options on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE: ALV.)
