Irwindale Speedway Groundbreaking Set for Tuesday, March 31, 1998, 2:00 p.m.IRWINDALE, Calif., March 30 -- Official Groundbreaking ceremonies for the all new Irwindale Speedway and concert facility will take place at the site on Tuesday, March 31, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. This unique 1/2-Mile automobile racetrack will be the first to be built in Los Angeles County in over 20 years. Members of Irwindale city government along with members of the Irwindale Speedway project Board of Directors will be on hand at the site to officially kick off the building of the brand new 6,500-seat facility. Presentation of both motorsports and concert events is scheduled to begin at the facility in late March of 1999. Featuring a "twin-ring" configuration; the racing surfaces will consist of a banked half mile outer track and a lower banked inner third-mile. Both tracks as well as the infield area will be paved. State-of-the-art sound and lighting systems are in the plans for the facility as are comfortable backs on each and every grandstand seat in the house. Fourteen unique corporate "Sky Box" suites will sit at the Club Level high atop the grandstands overlooking the main straight away and the start/finish line, a first for tracks of this size in Southern California. These 18' x 32' suites will be part of the vision to build a "1/2-Mile SuperSpeedway" featuring all the fan amenities that the giant "Super" tracks have, right in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. Racing cars from NASCAR stockers to USAC midgets, and many other variations in between will all be seen at Irwindale. "If it has four wheels and it can run on a 1/2 or third mile oval, you'll see it on track at Irwindale," said Promoter/General Manager, Ray Wilkings, well known locally as the long-time operator of the much missed Saugus Speedway track, and nationally for the past two years as the VP/General Manager of Las Vegas Motors Speedway. Top name musical talent in concert will also be on tap at the easy-to-get- to Irwindale facility. "We're planning on a full season of 20 to 30 concert dates here in 1999," said Wilkings. There just isn't a location like this ... The parking, the seats, the sound system, or the ambiance ... Anywhere in the Valley. We fully expect Irwindale to become the place for fans to enjoy a night of music under the stars as well an a first-rate motorsports attraction." Located at 13300 East Live Oak Avenue in Irwindale, California ... Directly adjacent to the 605 freeway. From the South: take the Live Oak West off-ramp West one block back over the freeway to the main entrance. From the North: take the Arrow Highway exit West, turn left at the second light (Live Oak) and drive a block and a half to the track. SOURCE Irwindale Speeday
