CarMax Earns Chrysler's Top Pacesetters Club Award and Five Star RatingRICHMOND, Va., March 26 -- After qualifying for Chrysler Corporation's prestigious Five Star rating earlier this year, the CarMax auto superstore in Norcross, Ga., has now earned the Top Pacesetters Club Award as the highest volume retail dealer among all Chrysler Pacesetters Club members. CarMax, a subsidiary of Circuit City Stores, Inc., has been revolutionizing the way consumers think about automobile purchases since opening the nation's first used-car superstore in 1993. Each CarMax location offers hundreds of top-quality vehicles with a customer friendly, low-price, no-haggle sales approach. Stores feature retail repair service, night and weekend hours for both sales and service, and "For Kids Only" play areas. All used cars undergo a comprehensive inspection and reconditioning. CarMax extended its low-pressure sales approach to new cars in 1996 when it added a Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep-and-Eagle franchise to its Norcross location. The Norcross store is one of three in the Atlanta market and was the first used-car superstore to be awarded a new-car franchise. The Stockbridge, Ga., store, which opened in June 1997 and serves the South Atlanta trade area, also sells Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep-and-Eagle vehicles. That store also received Chrysler's Five Star award in January 1998. To achieve membership in Chrysler's Pacesetters Club, a dealer must be one of the 100 highest volume dealers among those who have qualified for the Five Star Award. The Five Star Award requires that a dealer achieve specific objectives for customer satisfaction, sales and vehicle repair as well as employee training and facility maintenance. The dealer must also have in place specific systems that help ensure continuous delivery of outstanding service on a daily basis. CarMax was awarded the 1997 top Pacesetters Club Award and the Five Star Award For Excellence at the Chrysler Corporation Pacesetters Club Award Ceremony in Naples, Fla. "We believe these awards recognize the consumer commitment that is the core of the CarMax concept," said W. Austin Ligon, president of CarMax. "Our Associates have worked hard to establish high performance standards, and we believe our success is a clear indication that consumers want to buy cars the way we sell them." In addition to the two Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep-and-Eagle franchises, CarMax currently operates 18 used-car superstores serving the following markets: Washington, D.C./ Baltimore, Md.; Richmond, Va.; Raleigh, N.C.; Charlotte, N.C.; Atlanta, Ga.; Orlando, Fla.; Miami, Fla.; Tampa, Fla.; Houston, Texas; Dallas, Texas; and Chicago, Ill. The company expects to open approximately 10 stores over the next year and plans to add more new-car franchises. CarMax is a subsidiary of Circuit City Stores, Inc., the nation's leading retailer of brand-name consumer electronics and major appliances and a leading retailer of personal computers and music software. With headquarters in Richmond, Va., Circuit City operates 18 CarMax Auto Superstores; 500 Circuit City Superstores; four consumer electronics-only stores; and 52 mall-based Circuit City Express stores.
