Autoliv Streamlines Airbag ProductionSTOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 11 -- Autoliv Inc. , a worldwide leader in automotive safety, has proposed to the local works council that the assembly of airbag modules in Amsterdam should be transferred to other Autoliv plants in Europe located closer to the customers. The work force at the Amsterdam plant will be reduced by approximately 170 people from its current level of 460 (Most of the affected persons are temporary employees, but some 30 people will be required to leave). The remaining operations in Amsterdam, with almost 300 employees, will continue to manufacture inflators and textile cushions for airbag systems. The Amsterdam plant was originally intended by Morton Automotive Safety Products (ASP) to be its stepping stone to the European market. Following the merger last year with Autoliv AB, Europe's leading airbag supplier, an even more efficient manufacturing structure can be formed, which optimizes customer support and lower costs for the larger Autoliv Inc. organization. Autoliv Inc. develops and manufactures automotive safety systems for all major automotive manufacturers in the world. The company has more than 60 wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures with close to 20,000 employees in 27 vehicle-producing countries. Autoliv has 19 test tracks, more than any other automotive safety supplier. Sales in 1997 totaled US $3.3 billion. The company's shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, its Swedish Depositary Receipts on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, and its stock options on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE: ALV).
