Mitsubishi Motors Announces February Sales

3 March 1998

Mitsubishi Motors' Entry Level Mirage is Company's Sales Leader for February As Monthly Sales Reach Nearly 16,000 Units

Company's Year-To-Date SUV Sales Up 29 Percent, with Forecasted
                              Increase for 1998

CYPRESS, Calif., March 3 -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of
America, Inc. (MMSA), with February total vehicle sales reaching nearly 16,000
units, today announced a 2 percent decline in its monthly vehicle sales
compared to 1997 figures, with a 29 percent increase in its year-to-date sales
of sport utility vehicles.
"We're happy to report a continuing increase in brand recognition and more
specifically, sales, of our Montero and Montero Sport vehicles," said Kim
Custer, director of public affairs and corporate communications. "Though
passenger car sales continue to be a challenge for most of the industry, our
Montero Sport is proving to be quite a sales performer for us. And though
we're on the heels of a strong first full year of sales from 1997, based on
consumer demand we plan to sell substantially more mid-size sport utility
vehicles than we did last year," said Custer.
The company's entry level Mirage 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe together
were the monthly sales leader for the manufacturer, nearing 4,400 units for
February. "We're pleased to see consumers becoming more aware of the quality
and performance of this product that was completely redesigned last year,"
said Custer. He added that "great reviews in publications like AutoWeek and
the Sunday New York Times have helped consumers recognize Mirage's value
first-hand."
Other strong sellers for the company during February included the Diamante
luxury performance sedan, which reached more than 1,800 units and the Eclipse
sports coupe and Spyder convertible, which together reached 4,026 units.
"We're looking forward to the Summer introduction of our all-new 1999 Galant
which was revealed during the Chicago Auto Show last month," said Custer. The
stylish mid-size sedan is expected to be a strong competitor to the Camry and
Accord.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles,
including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
