Toyota Reports Best-Ever February Sales

    TORRANCE, Calif., March 3 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS),
U.S.A., Inc., today reported total sales of 90,922 units, an increase of 5.7
percent over last year's record-setting month and the best-ever February in
the company's history.
    "Not even the severe effects of El Nino in key markets could dampen
spending tendencies," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president.
"Consumer confidence may reach new heights as the economy continues strong in
the months ahead."
    Toyota's light trucks sold strongly during the month, recording a best-
ever February.  4Runner and RAV4 both recorded a best-ever February for the
second consecutive year with sales of 9,328, up 33.8 percent, and 5,461, up
19.7 percent respectively.  Sienna minivan recorded a best-ever February for a
Toyota van with 5,360 units. The Tacoma compact pickup truck also posted
strong numbers with 11,671 units, up 23 percent.
    The full-size Avalon sedan registered an outstanding month with a February
best-ever 5,675 units, up 13.4 percent.  Corolla also posted healthy sales
with 16,540 units, up 2.8 percent.
    The Lexus Division enjoyed its best-ever February with total sales of
9,730, up 43.3 percent.  Leading Lexus sales was ES 300 with best-ever
February sales of 5,018, up 21.6 percent.
    North American-produced vehicles represented 61.9 percent of February's
sales, down 1.3 percent compared with the same period last year.
