Chrysler Posts Second-Best February
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 3 -- Chrysler Corporation
announced today that U.S. sales for February 1998 were the second-
best in the Company's history, up three percent from the same period a year
ago. Total sales for February were 200,068 units compared to 193,983 sold in
February 1997.
Truck sales, including sport utility vehicles, minivans and pickups, were
up 10 percent over the same period a year ago. Total truck sales of 135,562
exceeded the 1996 record of 128,491 units.
Sport utility vehicle sales posted an all-time record of 46,166 units, up
35 percent over last year while surpassing the 1996 record of 34,586 units.
Jeep(R) Cherokee sales of 11,202 units showed an increase of 50 percent
compared to the same period one year ago and Dodge Durango sales were the best
month ever with 11,618 units sold last month.
"Our sales continue to be robust," said James P. Holden, Executive Vice
President, Sales and Marketing. "Our small and midsize cars continue on a
strong pace and we're starting to show some good numbers with our all-new
Chrysler Concorde and Dodge Intrepid. With two good months behind us, we are
beginning to look forward to a very good year."
Passenger car sales were down nine percent from last year, with total
sales of 64,506 vehicles.
However, several passenger car models also saw increases over last year.
Sales of Chrysler Cirrus (3,776 units) increased 74 percent compared to last
year, while Dodge Stratus (12,152 units) increased 59 percent, its best month
ever. Also, the all-new Chrysler Concorde had record sales of 5,140 units, a
33 percent increase over last year. Dodge Neon sales of 10,483 vehicles
increased by eight percent over one year ago.
Other records for the month include Dodge Division sales of 115,011, a
10 percent increase over the same period one year ago; Dodge Truck sales of
82,111, a 17 percent increase; Dodge Dakota sales of 14,104, a 35 percent
increase; Chrysler Sebring Convertible sales of 5,726, a 10 percent increase;
and Chrysler Town & Country sales of 6,105, an eight percent increase.
Total U.S. sales year-to-date are 371,623 vehicles, up three percent
compared to 362,140 vehicles a year ago.
