Chrysler to Continue Sponsorship of Detroit APBA Gold Cup Races

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 3 -- Chrysler today announced its
decision to renew its title sponsorship of the Detroit APBA Gold Cup
Hydroplane Races through the year 2001. The announcement was made at the
monthly meeting of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association.
Chrysler has sponsored the Gold Cup Races since 1995. The renewal
contract makes Chrysler the sole title and presenting sponsor of Detroit's
prestigious powerboat competition for years 1999, 2000 and 2001.
The Chrysler Jeep(R) Detroit APBA Gold Cup is presented by Chrysler
Corporation, the Chrysler-Plymouth Superstores and the Southeast Michigan Jeep
Dealers. This year's event will be held July 9-12.
Chrysler's continued sponsorship of the Chrysler Jeep Detroit APBA Gold
Cup represents the company's on-going commitment to the City of Detroit and
the Gold Cup race. "We're delighted to renew our title sponsorship agreement
with this cherished Detroit civic event," said A.C. (Bud) Liebler, Vice
President of Marketing for Chrysler Corporation . "The Gold Cup
draws more than 500,000 spectators to the Detroit riverfront each year. It's
a terrific way to promote Detroit and along with our southeast Michigan
Chrysler-Plymouth and Jeep dealers, we're happy to do whatever we can to make
that happen."
Chrysler Corporation shares a rich history with Gold Cup hydroplane racing
in Detroit. Horace Dodge of the Dodge Motor Car Company was a significant
powerboat owner in the 1930s, racing the Delphine, Excuse Me and Miss
Syndicate hydroplanes. The Delphine IV won the 1932 Gold Cup. Following
Dodge's death, his wife Delphine and son Horace Jr. continued the family's
racing involvement. The Dodge Memorial Pits and Pit Tower were built and
deeded to the City of Detroit by the Dodge family in 1966.
