Volkswagen's Sales Up in February - Best Since 1988

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 3 -- Volkswagen of America, Inc.
reported its best February sales results in 10 years.
    Volkswagen sold 11,682 cars in February, representing a 26.3 percent
increase over the same period last year when it sold 9,249.
    Sales again were led by Volkswagen's popular Jetta model with sales of
6,568, a 26 percent increase over 1997's mark of 5,213.  Passat sales also
gained momentum with 2,731 sales recorded this February versus 1,261 last
year, representing a 116.6 percent increase.  Also notable were Volkswagen
Cabrio sales of 958, a 46 percent increase over last year's mark of 656.
    For the year, Volkswagen sales are 22,801, an increase of 27.7 percent
compared to last year's figure of 17,857.
