Unique Full-System Capability Positions Meritor For the Anti-Squeeze Window MarketDETROIT, Feb. 26 -- Anti-squeeze power window applications on North American cars and trucks are forecasted to increase in the coming years and Meritor Automotive, Inc. is uniquely positioned to meet this growing demand. Anti-squeeze technology is a door systems comfort and security feature using sensors to detect resistance in a window's closure path and, in turn, trigger a reversal in window direction. Unique Speed-Sensing Technology In most speed sensing anti-squeeze systems available today, the sensor unit is a separate add-on to the full door system. Reno Ramsey, engineering manager of Electronic Controls, said the Meritor anti-squeeze system is unique in the marketplace because the speed sensor is mounted inside the window lift motor to save valuable interior door space, cost and represents an example of total system integration. Ramsey emphasized that Meritor is the only supplier in the United States today that offers full-system capability in power doors and windows -- including anti-squeeze technology. "We design and build nearly every component needed to produce door and window control systems," Ramsey said. "That includes all the electronics and sensing needed for anti-squeeze -- the software, the mechanisms and the electric motors -- everything." Ramsey said Meritor's single source capability brings economic advantages to automakers in terms of cost, quality and delivery. Single Source Capability Brings Benefits to the Global OEMs "We can build a door system that meets the needs of our customers and quickly adapt the design and manufacturing to meet their specifications for use anywhere in the world," Ramsey explained. "Meritor's anti-squeeze power window system will be able to meet every U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) for power doors and anti- squeeze windows in the near future, including windows controlled with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE). "That's significant for automakers who want to offer remote keyless entry systems that automatically adjust, open or close vehicle windows and sunroofs," Ramsey said. Electronic Control Capabilities Bringing Benefit To Global OEMs Meritor's Electronic Controls business with its Center of Expertise in Troy, Michigan, develops electronic controls for the electro-mechanical systems produced by Meritor's Roof, Door, Access Control and Seat Adjusting Systems businesses with their own Centers of Expertise in Germany, France, the U.K., and Canada. Meritor Automotive, with 1997 sales of approximately $3.3 billion, is a world leading supplier of a broad range of components and systems for commercial, specialty and light vehicles. Meritor consists of two global businesses: Heavy Vehicle Systems, a leading supplier of drivetrain systems and components for medium- and heavy-duty trucks, trailers and off-highway equipment and specialty vehicles including military, bus and coach, and fire and rescue; and Light Vehicle Systems, a major supplier of roof, door, access control and seat adjusting systems, electric motors and electronic controls, suspension systems and wheels for passenger cars, light trucks and sport utility vehicles.
