Speedway Motorsports Exercises Option To Purchase Sears Point Raceway

CONCORD, N.C., Feb. 23 -- Speedway Motorsports, Inc.
today announced that it recently exercised its option, after
acceleration by the seller, to purchase the 800 acres of land and permanent
structures which make up Sears Point Raceway.
Speedway Motorsports acquired the option in conjunction with the purchase
of other certain assets of Sears Point Raceway from Brenda Raceway Corporation
on November 18, 1996. The option gave Speedway Motorsports the right to buy
the speedway for $38.1 million, subject to certain adjustments. Speedway
Motorsports had been leasing the course from the seller. Also recently
completed, an additional purchase of 750 acres of adjoining property will help
to ease traffic congestion and parking for the speedway's 1998 events.
Located a few miles northwest of San Francisco in the heart of California
wine country and in the nation's fifth largest consumer market, Sears Point
Raceway is one of the most active motorsports complexes in the world. The
facility features a 2.52-mile, 11-turn road course, which is the site of an
annual NASCAR Winston Cup Series race, and a 1/4-mile drag strip, which hosts
an annual NHRA National event.
Since its acquisition by Speedway Motorsports, Sears Point Raceway has
embarked upon a multi-million dollar improvement project which will create
the country's only stadium-style road racing course and offer first-class
amenities comparable to any major sporting venue around the nation.
"Speedway Motorsports is a leader in the marketing and promotion of
motorsports entertainment," said Bruton Smith, chairman and chief executive
officer of Speedway Motorsports. "Sears Point has enhanced our leadership
position because of its presence in a top-ten market and its superior fan
amenities."
Speedway Motorsports, the owner and operator of Atlanta Motor Speedway,
Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Sears Point Raceway, Texas
Motor Speedway, and 600 Racing, is a leading marketer and promoter of
motorsports entertainment in the United States.
