Mitsubishi Motors Announces Participation in National Low Emission Vehicle Program

Beginning in 1999, Automaker's Vehicles Will Have
                        Significantly Lower Emissions

CYPRESS, Calif., Feb. 18 -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of
America, Inc. (MMSA) has announced that it will participate in the National
Low Emission Vehicle Program (NLEV). Beginning in the 1999 model year for
Northeastern U.S. states, and expanding nationwide in model year 2001,
Mitsubishi Motors' vehicles sold in the U.S. will be up to 70-percent cleaner
than vehicles meeting current federal emissions standards.
Established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), NLEV allows
automobile manufacturers to meet stricter national tailpipe emission standards
that are more stringent than EPA can mandate prior to model year 2004.
Initially, NLEV will improve air quality in the Northeast, and ultimately
nationwide if all automobile manufacturers participate in the program.
"Mitsubishi Motors is committed to being socially responsible," said Kim
Custer, director, public affairs and corporate communications for MMSA.
"Protecting and preserving the environment is one of the most important things
we can do as a company," continued Custer. "We are pleased to be a part of
the National Low Emission Vehicle Program, and encourage all other
manufacturers to participate for full effectiveness."
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles,
including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
