Mazda Announces Participation In Clean Car Program

WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 13 -- Mazda today notified the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of its intention to participate in the
National Low Emission Vehicle (NLEV) program. Mazda will begin providing low
emission vehicles for the northeastern states later this year and expand
nationwide in MY 2001.
Under the NLEV program established by the EPA, auto manufacturers will
voluntarily sell vehicles in the northeastern states which are 70 percent
cleaner than required by current Federal emissions standard. The NLEV Program
will provide substantial benefits to the northeastern states and, ultimately,
the nation.
EPA has asked 12 states and the District of Columbia to voluntarily
participate in the NLEV program. Only eight states and the District of
Columbia have opted-in to NLEV to date. In order to achieve the greatest
environmental benefit from the NLEV program, Mazda encourages the other
northeastern states to opt-in.
