GM Issues Statement Regarding Vice President Gore's White House Conference To Thank Automakers for Their Participation in the NLEV ProgramWASHINGTON, Feb. 12 -- The following is a General Motors statement for response to news inquiries regarding Vice President Gore's Press Conference today at the White House to thank the automakers for participating in the NLEV program. It may be attributed to Dennis R. Minano, GM vice president and chief environmental officer: "General Motors firmly believes the National Low Emission Vehicle Program (NLEV) is a victory for the environment, consumers and the states because it will bring cleaner air faster and at less cost to the nation than any regulatory option. We are pleased that the Administration recognizes that the real strength of this program is in the way the leadership of the participating states and the auto companies all worked together for the common goal of cleaner air. "GM first proposed the NLEV plan in 1993 as a way to avoid a costly patchwork of different state emission standards. Today, as we applaud the states who have supported this program, we again ask the four states of New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont to reconsider their position and participate in the NLEV program."
