Jaguar Sets Sales Record

Jaguar Sets Sales RecordMAHWAH, N.J., Feb. 4 -- Reflecting strong demand for its new V8-powered XJ Series sedans, Jaguar Cars today reported record January sales in the United States and its best January in eight years in Canada. Total U.S. sales of 1,539 beat the old January record set in 1990, the last year before the luxury tax was introduced. The U.S. total also surpassed January 1997 sales by 8.4 percent. Jaguar's sedan sales in the United States rose 28.5 percent, with three models -- XJ8, Vanden Plas, and XJR -- all at least doubling last January's sales as the supply pipeline filled following the new models' introduction in October. Jaguar redesigned virtually all the mechanical systems of the new sedans for the 1998 model year, and a new interior updated the traditional elegance of Jaguar wood and leather while accommodating such upgrades as side airbags. Despite equipment additions to both its sedans and sports cars for 1998, the U.S. company maintained 1997 suggested retail prices. Sales of Jaguar's XK8 coupe and convertible in the United States are running at projected levels, about double the traditional rate for the predecessor model. Their decline compared to 1997 reflects the record launch that XK8 enjoyed. One year ago Jaguar was trying to supply enough cars to fill an order backlog for the hot-selling sports cars. Jaguar Canada's January 1998 sales of 74 cars represent a 60.9 percent increase over last year to their highest January since 1990. Sedan sales in Canada rose 125 percent year-over-year to 63, also the highest January since 1990.
