Digital Wins $16 Million Agreement To Provide Volvo With Desktop PCs, Servers, Services

 Provides Enterprise Windows NT Solution for Volvo Car Dealer Unit's Network

    MAYNARD, Mass., Feb. 4 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced a significant customer win that further reinforces
Digital's leadership in delivering Windows NT solutions for the enterprise.
Volvo Car Dealers Development Corporation, Goteborg, Sweden, has selected
Digital to supply desktop PCs, Intel-based servers and other hardware, and
services for Volvo Car Dealers' integrated network throughout Sweden.  The
agreement is valued at approximately $16 million U.S.
    Digital was selected for its price/performance leadership, expertise in
Windows NT, and its ability to provide service and support to meet the tight
deadlines for this deployment.

critical enterprise solution," said Bruce Claflin, senior vice president and

validation of Digital's strength in delivering a full range of Windows NT
products and services to solve customers' most demanding needs."
    "With its leading technology and services for Windows NT client/server
environments, Digital was the ideal choice for Volvo," said Bengt-Ake
Andersson, general manager for Volvo Car Dealer Development.  "This program
will put Volvo ahead of the competition in terms of automating our dealer
network.  Digital has the capabilities to deliver this time-critical project
on schedule with excellent products."
    The purchase agreement includes more than 5,000 desktop PCs from the
DIGITAL PC 3000 and DIGITAL PC 5000 families.  A key component is the DIGITAL
PC 5510 with Pentium II processor, which delivers a powerful, feature-rich
platform for deploying Windows NT solutions.  The DIGITAL PC 5510 helps IT
managers such as those at Volvo reduce the total cost of ownership by
providing advanced security and manageability features.
    Under the agreement, systems will be deployed to more than 200 sites
throughout Volvo's dealer network in Sweden. Volvo is implementing an
aggressive technology upgrade to its dealer network, providing extensive
online support.  Using Digital systems, customers will be able to access
online data to view different Volvo car models, options, and features,
including pricing and availability information.
