Toyota Reports January Sales; Lexus Division Posts Best-Ever January

    TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 3 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., today announced January vehicle sales of 77,222, down 27.6 percent from
last year's best-ever January.
    The Lexus Division posted its best-ever January with sales of 8,061, up
5.2 percent from last year's previous record-setting January performance.  The
GS 300/400 sport sedans marked their best-ever month with GS 300 sales of
1,015 units and GS 400 sales of 925.  The Lexus LS 400 flagship sedan also
posted strong sales of 1,772 -- up 27.6 percent.
    The Toyota Division reported January total sales of 69,161 units, a
decrease of 30.1 percent from last year.  Following its 1997 best-selling-car-
in-America performance, Camry's January sales slowed to 18,691 units, down
49.5 percent from last year's best-ever January.  Avalon posted January sales
of 5,323, with a slight decline of 2.8 percent.  January Corolla sales were
down 21.3 percent at 16,409 units.
    In the truck and sport utility vehicle segments, Toyota's Sienna minivan
continues its strong sales performance with sales of 4,497 units.  The Tacoma
compact pickup truck posted sales of 10,188, down 8.7 percent, and 4Runner
sales were down 19.9 percent with sales of 7,999 units from last year's best-
ever January.
    Toyota's North American-produced (NAP) vehicles represented 62.2 percent
of January's sales, a .5 percentage point increase over last year.
