Chrysler Posts Best January Sales in Eight Years
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 3 -- Chrysler Corporation
announced that January sales increased two percent over the same period last
year, making it the second best January in company history. U.S. sales
totaled 171,555 units, up from 168,157 units recorded last year. The best
January sales were achieved in 1990.
"We set monthly records in nine categories," said James P. Holden,
Executive Vice President - Sales and Marketing, "clearly an indication that
the sales momentum we started last fall is continuing. And we anticipate our
sales to increase in the coming months as we sell more all-new 1998 Dodge
Intrepid and Chrysler Concorde sedans."
For the month of January, records were established for total truck sales,
Dodge Division, Dodge Truck and Chrysler's compact sedan platform -- the
Chrysler Cirrus, Dodge Stratus and Plymouth Breeze. Individual model records
were set by Dodge Dakota (10,492 units), Dodge Stratus (10,527 units),
Chrysler Sebring Convertible (4,278 units) and Chrysler Sebring Coupe (1,963
units) and Chrysler Town & Country (5,559 units).
Sales highlights include Chrysler Cirrus, up 24 percent compared to
January a year ago, Plymouth Neon, up 17 percent and Town & Country minivan,
up 18 percent. Overall, Chrysler minivans, Town & Country, Dodge Caravan and
Plymouth Voyager, are up 14 percent for the month and continue to dominate the
segment, despite increased competition in recent months.
Sales of Jeep(R) Cherokee totaled 10,125 units for the month, up
50 percent compared to the same period last year.
Dodge Division highlights include Dodge Stratus, up 31 percent from a year
ago, Dodge Neon, up 17 percent, Dodge Dakota, up 11 percent and Dodge Caravan,
up 17 percent. Dodge truck sales were up 18 percent from a year ago.
